Maximize Your Business’s Value

You have decided to sell your business.
How do you maximize its value before sale?

Once the decision to sell your business has been made, how do you maximize its value? You have your tax returns, you have your financial statements, and you know how much it says the business is worth.

But how do you make that value as high as possible? Here are five things you can do.

Clean up your Financials

Sometimes this is called “recasting.” and is a process of ensuring you have maximized the valid amount of money the business makes. This becomes the starting point for the price you can charge for your business. I have written an extensive blog post on this topic; this is a process done by a Business Broker to maximize your financial value.

Streamline Operations

No one wants to buy a business that is messy, and ensuring your operations are as efficient and effective as possible will make your business more valuable. Ensure the software on which you run your business is up to date and working properly. Ensure all your paperwork is clean, identifiable, and up to date. If you ship product, make sure your shipping department is clear and working efficiently. Doing these things will make your potential buyer understand that you have a great business they can come in and run!

Strengthen Customer Relationships

The buyer of your business is likely buying your business because you have happy, valid customers that buy your product or service. Make sure your customers fit this profile. Are any customers unhappy? Fix it. Do you have accurate records of all your customers and how to do business with you? If not, get them in order. Make sure your customer base is clearly defined and ready to be turned over.

Clean up the Place

Just like buying or selling a house, the way your business looks will affect its price. Do the offices look rundown? Clean them up! Just like a house, a new coat of paint can add a lot of value. Carpets worn, chairs broken down, holes in the wall? Get them fixed. You do not have to spend a lot of money to make your business look like it is worth the money you are charging.

Assemble your Team

Selling a business is hard work. Identify the team members that will help you in the process before you need them. This team should include the broker who is leading the process, your accountant, and a lawyer familiar with the process of selling a business.

Taking the care to do these things as your company is being readied for sale will maximize its value, maximize the price you can charge, and make a handoff to your new owner fast and clean.
